A day by day look at Chris Muir's Day By Day, punctuated by efforts to make the hurting stop.

I always find the turkey jokes a little bittersweet as well, because I think they originated way back in the idea of Sam being a better engineer than she was a cook. A little vestigial remnant of the time when Muir at least pretended he thought women could do things other than keep house and have babies. It feels out of place now and doesn't make sense anymore. Why is Mari causing things to explode? Who knows? I'm sure she's not being encouraged by her parents to do any science experiments. So now it's just random "comical" ineptitude at cooking, apparently passed down through the DNA. Or maybe these are secret MAGA magickal powers.
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting case, because Sam's engineer skills do come up every now and then. And notice that she and her daughters all like to fiddle with cars and bikes. But you never see any indication that they're ever going to say, hold down a professional job, or anything like that. Outside their sphere.
DeleteI think part of this boils down to Muir's increasingly reactionary outlook butting up against his deep-rooted and ever more naked misogyny. To put it simply, the best sort of woman is like a man, but not too like a man. She has to be like a man so that she understands the superiority of masculine things, and doesn't spend her time pushing a lot of inferior awful feminine things. But she can't be too much like a man, because then she might forget her place, and start thinking, ha, ha, that she's as good as a man.
It kind of reminds of Ancient Greece, where as the joke goes, a great deal of the approval of homosexuality was based on their belief that women were just a bothersome waste of time that no real man could respect.
Well, some of these manosphere "alpha" males like Andrew Tate have certainly been moving in the "do not allow yourself to be distracted by the women!" direction, and to a ludicrous degree. So you are correct, and it's all starting to make sense now.
