It's the Day's Day of Days! Because The Spider's Web.
And as we wonder if this time around we're finally going to see Ian's face, I just want to say what thoroughly revolting characters the twins have turned into, a pair of whiny, entitled bigots who put a front of bold superiority to cover being a pair of cowards who fear anything different or new, and blame everyone else for the obvious results of this. They're good proof of Raylan Givens' famous maxim (which I am freely paraphrasing)--"If you run into an asshole now and then, well, that's life. If everybody you run into is an asshole--no, you're the asshole." They're young women with the soul of a cantankerous old man.
'Cause, yeah, that's what they are.

As I suspected, this is also the end of the possible Mari-Javier connection, which with Muir's current mindset wasn't going to be allowed to happen anyway. If Muir was a smart storyteller, he could play this as a love triangle, but I don't expect him to.
ReplyDeleteAs I've just noted in my discussion of the Mystery Business(TM) Era a couple weeks ago, Muir is just incredibly bad at setting up personal dynamics in the strip. One of the fundamental rules of any such fictional universe is to set up some sort of personal conflict among your main cast and... he just doesn't do it. The central cast has always been incredibly chummy, especially for such a deeply unpleasant bunch, and even when Jan was full on Feckless Liberal, she was simply to ineffectual to be an actual source of conflict.
DeleteIt was as if the writers of Archie had just decided that Archie would just be going out with Betty, and Veronica and Reggie would be this annoying beta couple and that was that, read our comic. kids.
Exactly. I often think that I might have actually enjoyed a well-done conservative strip with real debate and personality conflict between the liberals and conservatives, but this has never been it, much as it masquerades as such.
DeleteThe arrival of Ian is yet more proof of this. He's already part of the hivemind, with the exact same opinions and feelings. All the characters in this story are really just one character.
All non-Beltway characters in the strip boil down to one of three options; "hivemind", "foil of hivemind" and "spearcarrier".
