Nothing But Static.

Muir has announced how the strip might pause for a few days as he deals with difficulties, which seems as good an excuse as any to talk about what appears to be a growing number of technical problems on his end. We've seen breakdowns, weird postings, and the Yearly Begging Bowl coming out with more mishaps every year.

Won't lie, sometimes I worry that I'll finally finish the epic work of taking care of all this blog's links to strips, only to watch the entire DbD archive vanish into the digital ether. Which usually makes me go outside and touch grass, so to speak.

  1. I can't help but also think that this is going to be the natural consequence of Muir's growing distrust of the world around him as he gets older and goes deeper into his rabbit hole. Mind you, I've got no love for our big tech companies either...but it increasingly sounds like Muir doesn't want to use certain software or websites, is probably too suspicious of society to research how to use tech or to ask for help, etc. Someday this may lead the strip to just go out with a whimper. Sorry if you do end up losing the work you've done....

    1. I just can’t get over how needlessly difficult, clunky and convoluted he makes all of this by refusing to use Patreon. It’s not like this is still 2006 and he has no other choice. It’s completely bizarre.

    2. To the first comment, don't worry, Eurobrat. I've lost better work.

To the second--as I've noted before, JLG, the entire DbD site seems to be running on some sort of bespoke engine that he set up in 2014. That the entire site doesn't regularly crash is an accomplishment, for either Muir or whoever's help he got putting it together wayback when. But it's still Muir choosing to do things in strange, byzantine manner, and yeah, it stands along the Begging Bowl.

    3. Oh yeah — eesh — I wasn’t even thinking about this in terms of the site itself. Which, as we’ve discussed, is almost mesmerizingly incompetent in its design, functionality, and navigability. Literally every aspect of it is completely bungled.
I compare it to being at a convention in a large convention center which, instead of just being a walkable, open-floor setup, is built as this tangled maze of narrow corridors that lead to random destinations, dead ends, and detours that cannot be individually connected to each other, are not laid out according to any rhyme or reason, and often require you to *exit the building* and go back in through another entrance.
The site is truly a marvel.

My creaky old Wordpress/Comicpress site may be a relic of the blogging era —along with this place — but it’s built on a damned *template* that was designed by people who understand basic web functionality.

If Muir were to gut the site and revamp the domain as a Wordpress/Comicpress site like a NORMAL behind-the-times person 😆, his archive would be smooth and easy to navigate. (There may be/have been webcomics that used Blogspot, but I’m not aware of them.)

But no. Whoever built this mad rabbits’ warren was *trying* to imitate that template without actually using it, and was doing so while drunk, high, and sleep deprived.
