Muir achieves comic absurdity when he goes for pathos, first from the absurd litany of tragedy being doled out on what amounts to secondary and tertiary characters, second from the Snidley Whiplashing of his federal dupes as they commit the grave sin of not being racist enough.

Interesting to note that when Muir, after years of fakeouts, finally commits to a bad thing happening to the cast, (maybe he has had pulled the 'all a dream' twist before when things got unstable), he immediately loads it with qualifiers to make sure it's not too bad. At least, not for the main cast.

Of course, the other aspect, once you move past Muir having given a drunk driving accident racist overtones, because of course he has, is that you find yourself wondering where the hell these secessionists are going for medical care. Either Redneckistan has a top notch ER unit, because, sure, why not, it's hole in the wall border county that is somehow an autarky, or they've gone to somewhere which has one, because, yeah, sure, the treason only counts when it's fun and doesn't cost anything.
