Once upon a time there were people who believed that world worked in a manner completely differently than it did. Whenever this was demonstrated to them, they became loud and accusatory, proving they were right with "facts" that had the slight flaw of not being true. The result was that any discussion with them was pointless, as they didn't even understand that they were losing an argument, and saw any repetition of their nonsensical points as a victory.
Unfortunately, they were powerful, which is why we all live underground on Mars while we're waiting for the nuclear fallout on Earth to clear up.
