Aside from that not really being what happened... Muir exemplifies how the conservative portions of the Boomers and Gen X are the sort of whiny jingoists who stocked Nazi rallies and complained about the Fatherland getting stabbed in the back.
Iraq is not a "make-up" for Vietnam. No war ever is a "make-up" for any other war, and the people who say it is are invariably people who won't be seeing the front lines.
