American "Fundamentalism" is of course famed for its hypocrisy, its rigidness, its ass-backwards "biblical literalness" which can insist that Noah's flood happened, but that Jesus never meant all that stuff about money and wealth. But less dwelt on is its tendency to go on about "false prophets" appearing in the guise of "sheep", and as Muir does here, "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions". The lesson they get from this being that one must be on constant guard for sheep, and of course, one must never have any "good intentions" whatsoever.
