In a good example of the ignorance Muir is showing, a sura (or as it is more often rendered these days surah) is a chapter in the Quran.
There are... significantly more than 12 of them.

What’s breathtaking about this is how absolutist it is in the crudest, most old-school sense. “To be a Muslim IS to be all these things,” definitionally. If Muir is capable of grasping that this is identical language to that used by the Nazi government (to which he and his readers still believe themselves to be diametrically opposite), he has clearly rationalized it along the lines of “Yeah, but for THEM it really IS.”
ReplyDeleteAs the guy who runs that Rung by Rung Tumblr noted, Muir has come a long way from when he used to celebrate the (largely misleading) democratic gains and voter turnout in the 2004 Iraqi elections — i.e., a country filled with Muslims.
As with so many other people who have down this path, what I wish I could know is whether they’ve changed, or they were REVEALED.
I tend to think it's a little of column A a little of column B, meself. The "tolerance" Muir gave to Muslims like the Iraqis was always conditional, and as Iraq did not magically become a stable democracy it boiled away.
