How Muir Went Mad(der).

As we definitively turn the page on the Trump era of DbD, it's time to consider the near complete unmooring from reality that Muir underwent during it. This was not unexpected--Muir had spent the entirety of the Obama administration getting crazier. Assuming that he was going to just keep going was a safe bet. But the manner in which it unfolded, that was odd. It was obvious to me from the moment Trump won that Muir was going to have a hard time of it in his presidency--Muir's strip had shifted to a crabbed, unpleasant paranoia as the Obama years went on that made any triumphalism a tough fit, while Trump was manifestly going to be a shitstorm. The only shocking thing was the speed of it all--within a month of Trump's presidency, Muir was declaring Republicans traitors, and crafting elaborate nonsensical theories out of elaborate nonsensical theories he read online.

Trump era DbD was a strange beast, split between a swaggering, hollow triumphalism and a bathetic whinging fear. The cast regularly ping-ponged between besieged keepers of "civilization" and triumphant victors who had no need to fear the untermenschen. Muir shifted at last into an open fascism, while of course continuing to insist he was opposed to the Democrats who were Nazis. And now, we are all left to wonder where does he go from here. In some respects, it seems likely on the path he was doubtless planning to go in the past, with the compound facing a siege from its vile Islamocommunazi opponents. But Muir's gotten nuttier over the last four years, and the plots he imagines have followed suit.

Prepare for awfulness, folks.
