It's the Day's Day of Days! Because Space Cop Gavan.
You know, as we stare at that... that, it's kind of fascinating how divorced Muir is from the 2024 presidential campaign. He was barely checked in for most of 2020, and now... he's somehow even less engaged. Muir's ongoing retreat from the real world started in the second Obama term and accelerated throughout the Trump years to land him here. I'm genuinely wondering how much further he can go. A Trump win might perk him up for a little while, but much like happened before, the ensuing shitshow would see him checking out pretty early.
I've been so distracted by everything else crazy about this trainwreck that I hadn't even thought about it in those terms, but you're right --- from reading DBD, you'd have almost no idea there's an election going on.
ReplyDeleteNot that it would force Muir to grapple with anything resembling real-life issues in any way. My other right-wing cartoonist morbid obsession is Todd Schowalter, who in some ways is Muir's opposite --- short and blunt where Muir is verbose and convoluted, gleefully infantile where Muir pretends to be mature. But Schowalter, like Muir, knows absolutely nothing about politics, policy, governance or current events, so the fact that his cartoons are frequently about the election do nothing to make them any more substantive, insightful, or connected to anything distantly resembling reality than DBD.
(For real, I'm openly addicted to this meathead's cartoons. I can't get enough of them. I even collect them on my hard drive. They absolutely fascinate me.)
Exactly. You can't say that DbD isn't a political strip anymore--oh, God, it drips politics--but it no longer regularly deals with contemporary issues. Occasionally, Muir tosses out a strip dealing with a weird distorted version of something that has happened, but by and large, we're just witnessing racist sovereign citizen fantasies happening in a badly-drawn fever dream.
DeleteAnd of course, a big problem with this lack of engagement is that if Kamala does win the election (which, please God, let it be so) people like Muir who exist in a right-wing bubble will be shocked, angry, some of them possibly violent. "What? People were organizing to get out the vote? We thought they were all mocking Biden's poopy diapers like we were !"
DeleteRighto, except that cluelessness somehow coexists with their absolute certainty of the existence of mass Democratic voter fraud. Some of these goons are downright fatalistic that the election will be stolen "again".
DeleteJust another example of right-wing doublethink.
Bingo. Honestly, Muir is probably better equipped mentally for a loss than a victory. A loss is 'We really won, but they cheated'. A win... well, we saw what happened back in 2017. At first he was overjoyed. By March he was pushing a new conspiracy theory every week while sporadically pretending to be happy.

ReplyDeleteIf I'm to understand the comment from eon and the reply from Don D. correctly, they're actually trying to insinuate that the device explosions all over Lebanon are not the work of Israeli intelligence but are simply the result of batteries manufactured a certain way reacting to atmospheric conditions?
I'm actually surprised they'd take this route. These are the types who love to salivate with joy whenever terrorist attacks are committed by those they favor, especially when it's against the "muzzies". Toxic trash outlets like the NYPost are falling all over themselves congratulating Israel for this savagery, and even the NYTimes is praising the intelligence work. It's sick.
And this crowd would want to voluntarily miss out on all that? Why come up with reasons to exonerate Israel when they could be having so much fun celebrating its successful murder and mangling of innocent bystanders? Not like them at all.
Incidentally I am dreading October 7th more than I can convey. People all over the world will be openly celebrating the deaths of the 1,200 Israelis slaughtered by Hamas, all because of Netanyahu and his fanatical regime's determined efforts over the past year to make Israel into the most despised pariah state in modern times.
It's going to really hurt my heart.
I believe at this point that history will one day recognize Netanyahu as one of history's greatest monsters. Yes, up there with Hitler.
They're shrugging it off because it lets them sneer at Green energy. Must always be fucking the planet.
