      Ayup. I've seen it suggested one reason the "Cities are on Fire!" has become such a refrain in some circles is that the opioid addiction taking off like it did in rural areas flipped things somewhat, and so as crime becomes a truly bad problem for them, the rural and suburban dwellers who have always identified themselves as the safe places have to tell themselves that the cities are fucking burning down. I don't think this is true of Muir, per se--as I've noted before, he's White Flight personified--but it creates an atmosphere where a guy like him can get pretty loopy.

    thats the only nice part about our winters, you can see the brand new immigrants go from fascination and wonder at the first sight of a fluffy snowfall to outraged foaming hatred the third time the plow fills their driveway in after a blizzard 🙂 that still doesn’t make it any safer on the roads but at least it stalls their getting on them.

    Literally, the bad Canadian weather brings him joy only because it makes immigrants miserable. Thank goodness he is not a typical Canadian.

      Yes. It always gets me just how emphatically they want bad things to happen to people. Ii can’t imagine being that way, wishing so much hurt and harm on others.
