The collapsing of Muir's epistemological universe to an ever smaller and crazier circle of delusional sources has been an ongoing cycle, where each fall into delusion helps trigger an even deeper fall when reality doesn't mach Muir's expectations. By this time, it's become abundantly clear that Muir will always choose to trust in his worst impulses rather than admit he was wrong, and that there's a sizable community that exists to help channel his sort into more an awful form of crazy.
