Oddly enough, I'm pretty familiar with Sarah Hoyt, a third-rate Sci-fi author (and that might be a generous estimate) who was part of a right-wing group who used slate voting to sabotage the Hugo nominations for a few years. She's very much Muir's sort of person, and it's safe to say anything she's raising money for is essentially a grift, even if she doesn't see it that way.
