We see it over and over in Muir's work--hell, the Gunpowder Republic storyline is made of it. The conviction that rural areas and red states are some unstoppable dynamo that are being held back by the cities and blue states, that they are the vital force that keeps the nation running.
It's all very blood and soil.
And out of touch with reality. Here in Oregon...as in many states...the conservative Eastern part of the state gets a lot of financial help from the urban Western parts of the state...the same urban parts they like to bitch and complain about.
ReplyDeleteAyyup. It's the dependent rural areas, fantasizing about their triumph while the parasitic Right suburban areas nod fervently, and tell them how good, strong and wise they are.
