So, why do they care again, when they feel they just seceded? Because it seems like they imagine secession involves them being able to say they're an independent nation whenever anything is asked of them, but also getting to keep all their present involvement in the US government in a 'heads I win, tails you lose' set up.
Which, to be fair, is how Muir imagines all of society should be run.
