I've seen the theory that at least part of the reason for the bizarre misogynistic tangent the Right has taken on the Trump assassination attempt is because seeing that the loose control on guns can hurt them, with the attempted assassin not showing any real ideological motives has left them desperately trying to avoid dealing with reality and falling back on the only Right wing saw that will even roughly fit the circumstances.
In Muir's case, it fits.
